Terrapure Guidelines for Scrap Battery Transport

Shrink-Wrapped

  • Leak-free batteries must be placed in an upright position on secure skids suitable for supporting heavy weight
  • The batteries must be organized into equal layers without any skid overhang to create a uniform “square” bundle to allow for safe stacking
  • Cardboard sheeting between each layer is recommended to improve stability and minimize the risk for leakage
  • Plastic shrink-wrap is to be used on all loads and should contact the skid to aid in stability. At minimum, a double layer of wrap should be used on the whole battery pallet
  • No more than three layers of batteries will be accepted. Skid sizes should be in the range 40”- 48” on the sides. Overall loaded skid height (i.e. including skid height) should not exceed 38”

Other Packaging

  • Gaylord boxes will be accepted but must be on skids and in good condition. The bottom half of the box must be shrink-wrapped to the skid to ensure it does not slip off during transport, and a non-metallic strap be placed around the box to provide support
  • Wooden crates or boxes, ½ oil tanks and most drums are not accepted
  • Steel-clad batteries must be strapped to the skid, with non-metallic strapping. If more than one steel-clad battery is on the skid, the batteries must be strapped together

Shipping

  • All transporters must comply with regional transportation regulations
  • A copy of the bill of lading is to be retained by the shipper, carrier and receiver
  • Carriers have the authority to refuse a pickup if they feel a load is unsafe

Exceptions to these guidelines must be discussed with Terrapure. Any questions regarding the safe packaging of Terrapure shipments should be directed to the Montreal Facility at (866) 443-7524 or the Toronto Facility at (905) 279-9555.

    Battery Recycling

Do you recycle all types of batteries?

Our recycling facilities are primarily focused on recycling lead batteries. Lead batteries come in all shapes and sizes from many sources, including: vehicles (gas and hybrid cars), golf carts, backup power units from large facilities, forklifts and other heavy machinery.  However, we do also handle and sort other battery chemistries for recycling by third parties.

With our deep operational expertise, strong commercial relationships, and ability to proactively manage within a stringent and tightening regulatory and public policy environment, we are well positioned to expand our services as the battery manufacturing market continues to grow and evolve in the future.

How do you recycle lead-acid batteries, and what happens to all the separated parts afterwards?

Lead from a battery can be recycled infinitely. See how our lead-acid battery recycling process creates a sustainable, closed-loop solution that helps conserve natural resources and protect the environment.

Once the batteries have been separated, the lead is purified, re-constituted in specific customer-driven formulas and resold – predominantly back to battery manufacturers. Having said that, lead is widely used in a number of applications, so our lead has also been reused for medical radiation shielding, wheel weights, roofing and ammunition.

The plastics are separated, cleaned and recycled for reuse in the making of new battery casings.

The acid is collected and managed in an environmentally sound manner.

Do you buy used lead batteries and other types of scrap lead?

We’re happy to quote on used lead batteries, but they must be properly packaged for transport. You can visit our Scrap Battery Transport page for packaging guidelines.

We also accept other types of scrap lead. Get in touch with us for more details on the materials we’ll accept.

What other types of materials do your facilities process or recycle?

Besides batteries, our facilities process and recycle:

    • Other lead-bearing materials
    • Other battery chemistries (handling and sorting for recycling)
    • E-waste (handling and sorting for recycling)
    • A wide variety of industrial wastes

If you’re not sure whether our facilities will accept your used batteries, lead-bearing materials or waste, feel free to contact us for more information.

Do you sell new batteries or take exchanges?

Sorry, we do not do exchanges or sell new or refurbished batteries.

What are lead batteries used for?

Lead batteries are an irreplaceable link to connect, protect, transport and power our way of life. Without this essential battery technology, modern life would come to a halt. Lead batteries are used across a wide range of industries and applications from transportation to communication networks. Land Reclamation

Microbial activity in mine-impacted soil tends to shut down, which makes it difficult to revegetate. There are a number of ways to improve soil health, but traditional methods are often temporary, labour intensive and costly.

It’s why biosolids-based soil amendments are proving to be an innovative alternative. These organic materials are not only more affordable, accessible and nutrient-rich, they also offer a promising, long-term strategy for sustainable mine and industrial site rehabilitation.

      What We Do

Terrapure provides organics to improve soil health for your reclamation and revegetation program, while minimizing odours and other off-site impacts to respect neighbouring communities.

Our experts manage your organics program from start to finish. We help you obtain Environmental Compliance Approvals; consult with stakeholders; apply the organics; and assist with annual reporting.

      How We Do It

After sampling soil and assessing your needs, we create a Custom Reclamation Mix to ensure the organics product thrives in your project, while meeting regulatory standards. We are careful to work with your closure plans to identify the best revegetation techniques and seed blends to establish a sustainable vegetative cover.

        Farmland Application

Nutrient-rich, biosolids-based soil amendments are extremely valuable. When applied to land, they replenish soil nutrients and organic material, increase soil porosity and help combat erosion. Biosolids provide much more than the NPK found in commercial fertilizers.

        What We Do

Our organics experts create and manage your custom organics program – without interrupting your agricultural operation or damaging your land. Our nutrient- and organic-rich soil amendments are particularly effective in improving yields and, by extension, your bottom line.

        How We Do It

Before application, our certified personnel test your soil and prepare a customized program based on the results, so you get exactly what your soil needs. Every program we create meets all regulations, taking the guesswork out of compliance. When we apply organics to your land, we make all the arrangements, and provide you with a comprehensive post-application report.

          Biosolids Collection & Management

Instead of incinerating and landfilling biosolids—which is costly and wasteful—we collect municipal biosolids and manage the process of applying them to rural farmland, mines and industrial sites for beneficial use. It is the most sustainable and cost-effective solution.

          What We Do

As a leader in biosolids management, we have the expertise and resources to collect and manage municipal biosolids reliably, cost effectively and without interrupting your operation.

Once collected, our experts apply the material to agricultural land. We also use these nutrient-rich materials to help reclaim mines and other industrial sites to revitalize soil. In both cases, we keep valuable resources from landfills.

You can rest assured our biosolids application methods are responsible, compliant and pose no risk of liability to your municipality.

          How We Do It

Our drivers and operations professionals who arrive on site are highly trained to do their job safely, competently and in a way that allows you to continue business as usual. You don’t need to free up your staff to help or supervise.

When it comes to land application, our approach is scientific, responsible and compliant with all relevant regulations. We have access to the largest land bank available in Ontario, with over 30,000 hectares of farmland, mine-impacted land and industrial sites identified for land application.

                Safe Soil Remediation

Soil treatment is about finding the best solution for protecting human health and the natural environment. Whether contaminated soil can be remediated or requires secure disposal, Terrapure has the capability to manage both.

                What We Do

We have the expertise and resources to excavate, transport and treat contaminated soil, safely and in compliance with all regulatory requirements.

For treatment of soil removed from contaminated sites, our permitted facilities provide bioremediation, which uses microorganisms to remove or neutralize organic pollutants. Once treated, the soil can be disposed of safely or reused as clean fill, industrial fill or landfill cover and capping, depending on the level of contamination.

                How We Do It

We determine the best soil treatment solution based on: the nature, toxicity and origin of the contaminant; the present and potential hazard related to the degree of contamination; the chemical and physical characteristics of the soil; the land use; the time available for remediation; cost-benefit analysis; and stakeholder acceptance.
